From the early days, Fr. Adegbite used to evangelize different places/areas with a team of Lay people. When he was posted to Lekki in 1998, he invited some Lay people to assist him evangelize Lekki, which was then a virgin land. He later used these Lay people working with him to form the Association of Friends of Jesus (FOJ).
The initial outlook of the Friends of Jesus, was such that people gathered for recollection and other spiritual activities once a month.
Part of the spiritual exercises,
included attending mass daily and going for evangelism. Thereafter, monthly reports were given of these activities.
Subsequently, new members were brought in through introduction by existing members. As at then, the group’s uniform was a white dress/shirt, with a wooden cross on their necks, given by the founder on the induction day.
Rev. Fr. Patrick Adegbite was a priest with a lot of charisms and based on that, he used to organize healing masses, which attracted a lot of people. During such healing
programs, members of Friends of Jesus participated actively. At a point, Fr. Adegbite realized the need to incorporate the group fully into the healing
program, thus Friends of Jesus evolved into the present-day charism group.
Membership was then thrown open to all parishioners. Life in the spirit seminar was
organized to groom ministers with a mandatory 33 days program for evangelical field experience.
During the time of Fr. Adegbite, the Friends of Jesus Association was localized in SS Philip and James Catholic Church Lekki, with members coming from all parts of Lagos and its surrounding environs.
This position changed shortly after the demise of Fr.
Adegbite on 31st October, 2007, with a reasonable spread of the group in several
deaneries of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos.
Membership into Friends of Jesus, is open to all adults, teenagers and children of all
sexes, who indicate interest to worship and pray with us. We now have different ministries and members working in these ministries in various capacities, who have
undertaken the FOJ Spiritual Development Program.
Just before the demise of Father Adegbite, he brought out a new uniform for the Friends of Jesus Association, which has a blue background with the logo of Friends of Jesus all over.
Presently, the Friends of Jesus Association has spread and expanded to different parishes and the group is currently working to cover the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and beyond.
